On July 1, 2010, the City of Rancho Cordova will be annexing an unincorporated portion of Sacramento County. An annexation is a process by which a city expands its boundaries to include surrounding areas that could logically be part of the city, or fall under its sphere of influence. When an area is annexed by a city, the city then assumes responsibility for providing services to both residents and businesses in the annexed area.

This annexation area was originally intended to be part of the City of Rancho Cordova when it was established in 2003. Inclusion of this area in the City's boundaries has been a goal of the City Council since incorporation, as the area is a logical part of the City boundaries. The annexation will benefit residents and business owners in the annexation area; the City is able to provide a higher level of services, including improved law enforcement and public works services, in addition to other services listed below.

The annexation area is approximately 1.2 square miles and stretches from Highway 50 south down the Sunrise Boulevard corridor to White Rock Road. Stretching east, the area also follows Highway 50 and the Folsom Boulevard corridor up to Hazel Avenue. The area is outlined in the adjacent aerial and zoning maps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  How will being in the City affect my business?
A:

  • The City Economic Development Department will provide benefits and resources for area businesses.
  • Responsive service from Planning Department, including expedited review for many permits
  • Consistent zoning and code enforcement.
  • Timely and prompt responses to developer requests.
  • Better access to local elected leaders (5 at-large council members)
  • Significantly improved Public Works services, including: 48-hour turnaround time on pothole repair, inclusion in the City’s street resurfacing schedule and bi-weekly street cleaning (a first in the area!).
  • The City Police Department (RCPD) will provide improved preventative law enforcement and emergency response services by increasing the number of officers on patrol in the annexation area.

Q.  Will there be zoning changes that affect my business?
A.
There will be minor zoning changes, but the City has worked closely with business and property owners to avoid negative impacts to your business. Existing uses will continue to be permitted by the City and new zoning will expand opportunities for use and development of property, giving current business and property owners more options than they have had to date.

Q.  Will my taxes go up with the annexation?
A.
No. Taxes will not be affected by the annexation.

Q.  Will my fees go up with the annexation?
A.
On average, our fees are comparable to other jurisdictions in the region.

Q.  Do I need a new Business License?
A.
Your Sacramento County business license will be honored until it expires (which could be up to 3 years if you recently obtained a license). You will receive a notice from the City when your license nears expiration. Please note that any changes to your ownership or to your business location do require that you apply for a new business license. The City currently issues 1-year general business licenses for $99 (some businesses may require additional licensing). Please Contact the Business Licensing Dept. at (916) 851-8768 with any questions.
