Mathew Kilgore Cemetery

Preserving our Past for the Future

It is with immense pride that the City of Rancho Cordova announces the recent acquisition of the historic Mathew Kilgore Cemetery located on Kilgore Road between Trade Center Drive and Sun Center Drive.

It is rare to find such a rich, historical feature in the heart of a new city. Established in 1874 and incorporated in 1888, more than 150 people are buried at the site. Along with the extended Kilgore family there are many other pioneer founding family plots with names such as Deterding, Studarus and Yost among others. At the City Council Meeting on September 6, 2005, with several descendents of these pioneers in attendance, the County Historical Cemetery Association designated Mathew Kilgore Cemetery as a historical cemetery and presented a plaque to the City Council for placement at the Kilgore Signproperty.

Since taking possession in August the cleanup has already begun. Trash has been removed and trees are being tended. The City will also be addressing long-term issues such as fencing, improving the existing roadway, improved landscaping, creating an entrance to the cemetery from Kilgore Road, and researching the feasibility of establishing a Rancho Cordova Cemetery
