As tablets and smartphones become an increasingly integral part of our daily lives, the desire from employees to use their own personal devices at work is increasing as well. The City of Rancho Cordova took a long and careful look at the pros and cons of bring your own device (BYOD) and decided to adopt a policy (see images below.) The policy seeks to accommodate the desires of staff to use their own devices while still maintaining the levels of security and control needed to mitigate the potential hazards.

Using a cloud based MDM solution from Meraki, the City of Rancho Cordova is able to locate devices, deploy software and apps, and enforce security policies all from a browser based dashboard or mobile app. Through the Meraki MDM, the City is able to allow various levels of BYOD connectivity. From basic Active Sync with Exchange servers for email and calendar updates to full blown Windows 7 virtual desktops with VPN on tablets and phones, the Meraki MDM solution allows the City to have great flexibility within the bounds of their BYOD policy.
