The Sacramento Children’s Museum (SCM) has partnered with the City of Rancho Cordova to develop the region’s first children’s museum, scheduled to open next year. The groundbreaking for this significant addition to the community is scheduled for Wednesday, October 21st, at 2701 Prospect Park Drive in Rancho Cordova from 4 to 8 p.m.
The groundbreaking ceremony will take place at 5:15 p.m. Manning the shovels will be representatives of the SCM Founding Partners, Rancho Cordova Mayor Dan Skoglund; Mindi Stewart, President of the Junior League of Sacramento; and Terry Street, President of Roebbelen. The emcee will be Kathleen Palley, SCM Founder and President.
Music, games, entertainment, and other free activities for the whole family will be part of the event. Attractions will include Raceways, an exciting hands-on activity for children of all ages to experiment with gravity and momentum by using golf balls in a 1,500 square foot exhibit. Other activities will include “make your own lava lamp,” tattoos, face painting, and a coloring station. Radio Disney will be on-site with music and prizes for children under 14 years. Dinger from the River Cats will be a special guest, along with members of the Sac Metro Fire Department, the Rancho Cordova Police Department, and the Canine Unit from the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department. Most of the groundbreaking events will be outside the building but the Raceways exhibit and the Museum site open house tours will be inside.
Jamba Juice will sell smoothies, wraps, and other food items with a portion of the proceeds benefitting the Sacramento Children’s Museum.
A unique attraction at the Museum will be a permanent exhibit of children’s art produced from artwork kits that will only be available for purchase at the Groundbreaking Event. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for children to create art that will be permanently displayed in the Museum,” said Natalie Truman, SCM Fund Development Director.
“We are excited to have our first public event that will showcase what the SCM is all about,” said Truman. “When open, the Museum will feature several exhibit areas that will encourage children’s imaginations and prompt them to test, tinker, laugh, and wonder.”
“We are proud to have played a role in creating this special attraction that will be located right next to the Rancho Cordova City Hall,” said Mayor Skoglund. “People from all over will be charmed and delighted by this museum - right in our community.”
SCM is scheduled to open in 2010. Additional information regarding the Groundbreaking Event can be found on the Museum website at www.sackids.org.
Open to the public, the Groundbreaking Event is sponsored by Kaiser Permanente.
