Rancho Cordova Wins Tree City USA Designation Once More

Post Date:08/16/2022 9:18 AM
For the third consecutive year, the City of Rancho Cordova has earned the Tree City USA designation from the Arbor Day Foundation for growing its urban tree canopy, as well as the Tree City USA Growth Award for the increased level of tree care and community engagement.
“We are honored to be named a Tree City USA again and thank the Arbor Day Foundation for this recognition,” said Steve Harriman, Operations and Maintenance Manager. “Trees are a crucial part of our community and provide many benefits to those who live, work, learn and play in Rancho Cordova.”
The city created programs that make it easy to plant more trees and educate residents and businesses about tree care. Some of the questions we see the most:
  • • What is an urban forest or tree canopy? This term describes trees within a community that grow along paved surfaces, buildings, parks and homes.
  • How can I receive free trees? Residents and businesses may receive up to ten free trees if there is adequate space on the property by visiting CityofRanchoCordova.org/FreeTrees. We also provide tree care advice from the city arborist and free stump removal from residents’ front yards.
  • Why should plant trees at my home or business? Some of the key benefits of urban trees include improved air quality, shade and energy conservation, and an increase in your property value. Trees can also increase economic activity at your business, and stability and desirability in your neighborhood.
  • During a drought, is it wise to plant trees? Drought conditions in the Sacramento region are likely to persist on a regular basis, but fall, winter and summer months are the best times to plant new trees since the temperatures are more mild. Planting trees in the summer heat requires diligently monitoring tree conditions and soil moisture.
  • How much water does a new tree take? Every tree is different, so check the soil moisture first and make sure it is not too soggy. During dry months, general guidelines are:
    • One-year old trees: Five gallons 2 – 3 times a week.
    • Two-year old trees: Ten gallons once a week.
    • Three-year old trees: Fifteen gallons every other week.
  •  How can I learn more? To sign up for free trees or to learn more, visit CityofRanchoCordova.org/FreeTrees.
