Academics and Real-world Technology Provide Pathways to Higher Learning

Post Date:12/16/2022 3:01 PM

Dr. Mahaffey’s classroom at Cordova High School (CHS) is no ordinary classroom. Walk in and you will find an arm simulator, scrubs and large virtual anatomy tables complete with 3D displays.

This Patient Care course integrates academics with real-world relevance to prepare students for college and careers. And it’s the academics combined with real-world experience that is the foundation of the nine pathways that CHS offers as part of its Career Technical Education (CTE) programs.

“This program has been a great opportunity for me to get hands-on experience and learn about career opportunities in the medical field,” said Abigail Perona, a student in the Patient Care course.

In this two-year International Baccalaureate Career Programme (IB-CP), students receive an introduction to health careers and the healthcare system. They get hands-on experience by practicing medical draws and can earn certifications in blood borne pathogens, HIPAA, CPR and more. There are also four Anatomage Tables—the most technologically advanced 3D anatomy visualization and virtual dissection tool—that allow students to virtually explore human anatomy and its functions. Next month, there will even be an ambulance simulator in the classroom for students to learn from and explore.

“We are proud of our CTE Programs, and are grateful for the administrators, staff, business, education, and community partnerships that make them successful,” said Alicia Caddell, M.A, CTE Coordinator for the Folsom Cordova Unified School District (FCUSD). “I also want to thank Sacramento County Office of Education for their work and commitment to the CTE Administrator Community of Practice cohort.”

In addition to the Patient Care Course, which is within the Health Science & Medical Technology sector, other industry sectors include: Agriculture and Natural Resources; Arts, Media and Entertainment; Building and Construction Trades; Hospitality, Tourism and Recreation; Manufacturing and Product Development; and Marketing, Sales and Service.
