Tips to Beat the Heat

Post Date:06/06/2024 1:03 PM

Temperatures are rising in Rancho Cordova and throughout the Sacramento region, and we want to help our community beat the heat. Here are tips to stay safe and enjoy summer.

Tips to Beat the Heat:

  • Stay hydrated, and drink plenty of cool water. Avoid alcohol and hot, heavy meals.
  • Limit your exposure to the sun, and when possible, stay in air conditioning on hot days. If you don’t have air conditioning, take cool showers or freeze a wet cloth to wipe down your head and neck. Visit libraries, cooling centers or other cool spaces to escape the sun and heat.
  • Be sure to check on neighbors and loved ones, including those who are older, less-mobile, living alone and those who don’t have or use air conditioning.
  • Wear light and loose-fitting clothing.
  • Avoid being outside at the hottest part of the day. If you have to be outside, try to stick to the cooler morning and evening hours. Take frequent, shaded or air-conditioned breaks. Do not exercise outside during the hottest part of the day.
  • Never leave a person or a pet in a parked car, even for a short time. Even on a mild 80-degree day, the temperature inside a car can reach up to 100-degrees or more in just a few minutes.
  • Give your pets plenty of fresh, clean water. Don’t exercise your pets in high temperatures or when the pavement is hot. Make sure they have a shady place to get out of the sun or bring them indoors.
  • Protect your skin by using sunscreen that is SPF 30 or higher.
  • Watch your local weather forecasts so you can plan outdoor activities safely and pay attention to any extreme heat alerts.
  • Some medications can impair the body’s ability to regulate temperature. During hot and humid weather, individuals taking medications can be at increased risk of developing excessive body temperature or hyperthermia.
