A Journey of Resilience

Post Date:09/04/2025 12:45 PM

For the better part of four years, Miguel has been on the radar of the city’s Homeless Outreach team. His journey has not been an easy one—marked by resistance, setbacks, and repeated struggles with homelessness and substance abuse. Miguel entered and completed the Chronic Offender Rehabilitation Effort (CORE) program twice in the past, only to find himself back on the streets. The CORE program is an initiative aimed at dressing behaviors of repeat offenders to break the cycle of criminal behavior.

During his most recent incarceration, Miguel made a life-changing decision: He chose to give CORE another chance. This time, something was different. He not only completed the program but has since built a new life for himself—housed, clean and sober. Earlier this week, Miguel came back to visit our team, and in his own words said, “Thank you for not giving up on me, please tell everyone thank you.”

What made his visit even more powerful was witnessing his strength in action. While onsite, individuals who once would have been considered his peers approached him. Miguel exchanged a few words of small talk before confidently walking away, a clear sign of his new path.

“Miguel’s courage and determination to rewrite his story are nothing short of inspiring, and we are honored to have walked alongside him on this journey,” said Homeless Outreach Coordinator Heather Cook. “Seeing Miguel’s transformation reminds us why persistence, compassion and consistency matter. His story is a testament to the power of second, third and even fourth chances—and to the belief that no one is beyond hope.”

Miguel’s story is just one example of the resilience and hope that can be found in our community. If you’d like to hear more inspiring stories like his, sign up for the city’s e-newsletter at CityofRanchoCordova.org/ENews.
