How did these free vaccine clinics begin?
Petco Love launched a grant award program allowing animal welfare agencies to obtain preventative vaccines (DAPP and FVRCP) to administered to the public for free. The City of Rancho Cordova Animal Services Division applied for the program and received the vaccines along with some funding allowed to use towards helping animals in the community. Simultaneously, the city began discussing ways to obtain more pet licensing compliance and decided that we should also provide free rabies vaccines to the residence to help keep the pet owners in compliance with our local licensing ordinances.
$75k from the ARPA fund (now the Community Enhancement and Investment Fund) was allocated to cover the costs of the rabies vaccines and other supplies needed to start their first vaccine and microchip clinic. The first clinic was held on May 22, 2021, where 78 animals were vaccinated against the rabies virus.
Since inception, the city has provided approximately six vaccine & microchip clinics every year. There is a current goal to increase the number of clinics held in 2026.
Who can go to these clinics?
All Rancho Cordova residents should have access to care. With the goal of providing free preventative medicine for the pets in our community, the city hopes that all Rancho Cordova residents enjoy the services offered in a "drive-by" clinic atmosphere.

I’m attending the vaccine clinic. What do I need to bring/do? What should I know?
- You must bring proof of Rancho Cordova residency. The clinics will not vaccinate animals out of city jurisdiction.
- All cats must be in a pet carrier. If you do not have a carrier, the clinic staff will not be able to see your pet. Please ask to borrow a carrier from a friend, look for a free one on social media, or contact the Animal Services office prior to the clinic if you are unable to find one.’
- All dogs must be on a leash of six-feet or less. No extension leashes please.
- The animals must remain in the vehicle with you while you wait your turn for service.
- You must bring your pets previous vaccine information for the most appropriate services to be provided. There are legal time periods that must be followed based on previous vaccine. If you do not have your records, the rabies vaccine will default to a one-year duration and the other vaccines may be only valid for three-weeks.
- In most cases, the clinic staff will ask the pet owners to assist with holding their dog to reduce the stress on them. Staff and volunteers will be able perform all treatments without the pet-owner's assistance if that is more appropriate. All cats will be brought into a portable tent to prevent any cats from escaping while vaccines/microchipping is done.
