About the Project
As part of Rancho Cordova’s Art in Public Places program, the city is piloting an Asphalt Art initiative to creatively transform intersections and sidewalks into vibrant, welcoming, and more people-centered community spaces.
Asphalt art refers to the creative use of colorful, durable paint applied directly to streets, sidewalks, crosswalks, or plazas. It's designed to beautify public spaces, celebrate local identity through public art, and encourage drivers to slow down.
On Spring Service Day (May 17, 2025), three colorful paintings designed by local artists and community members were installed along Lincoln Village Drive, helping to celebrate community.
The Lincoln Village Asphalt Art Project is being launched as a pilot program, with opportunities to receive feedback from community organizations, Rancho Cordova residents and the City Council.
Based on its success, the city may consider expanding asphalt art to additional neighborhoods in the future.
Why Asphalt Art?
- Celebrates Community: Each design is rooted in Rancho Cordova’s spirit — highlighting local creativity, history, and identity.
-
Brings Neighbors Together: Art is a powerful tool to connect people. Volunteers from across the city, but especially from the Lincoln Village neighborhood helped bring these murals to life during Spring Service Day 2025.
-
People-first design: Streets serve many purposes and asphalt art can help slow down drivers by reinforcing that streets are shared spaces, not just roads to pass through. Studies, including a landmark Asphalt Art Safety Study from Bloomberg Philanthropies Asphalt Art initiative, show that colorful street paintings can help slow down vehicle speeds, increase pedestrian visibility, and make crossings safer for everyone. The three art pieces will enhance the Lincoln Village traffic calming project planned for later this Spring/Summer.
